A Khoi-san woman of South Africa, she was lured to Europe with the promise of fame and riches. She was transported to England in 1810 and exhibited on stage in a cage as a freak known as the Hottentot Venus. Sarah Baartman was born as Sawtche or Ssehura or Saartjie, meaning the diminutive form, in 1789. Being just 4ft 7in tall, she belonged to the Khoikhoi nomadic tribe that lived in the eastern part of the Cape Colony of today’s South Africa. THE LIFE AND TIMES OF SARA BAARTMAN is the fascinating story of this Khoi Khoi woman who was taken from South Africa, and then exhibited as a freak across Britain.

Although her exact date is birth is  Contemporary accounts usually refer to Baartman as the “Hottentot Venus” or “ Saartjie” (“little Sara” in Dutch).
