She was transported to England in 1810 and exhibited on stage in a cage as a freak known as the Hottentot Venus. Sarah Baartman was born as Sawtche or Ssehura or Saartjie, meaning the diminutive form, in 1789. Being just 4ft 7in tall, she belonged to the Khoikhoi nomadic tribe that lived in the eastern part of the Cape Colony of today’s South Africa.
